Top Teethers: 8 Drool-Worthy Picks — Baby Cheapskate

The Razberry was fantastic! My poor son was only 2 months ancient when he started teething and got his first two in at 4.5 months. No matter what I gave him, he just couldn't hang onto a teether to soothe himself at that age. I saw the Razberry at Babies R Us a small while after that and jumped on it. He was so pleased to finally have something to chew on that he could manage.

For babies that start teething early: teething biscuits or t-rings ...

My LO is teething – it’s his two front bottom incisors coming in, the pointy ones! Poor small guy. We tried the teethie rings, warm and cold washcloths, rubbing his gums. None of it helped.

So we gave him Baby Orajel, within 10 minutes he falls asleep for his nap and then when he wakes up, he’ll be fine the rest of the day. We’re also going to pick up some natural teething tablets and try those – if they work better then we’ll do those.

Alternatives to the pink stuff

Alternatives to the pink stuff

The Irish Times – Tuesday, March 8, 2011

When your children are unwell, there are ways to make them feel better without resorting to a spoon of medicine, writes JOYCE HICKEY

'MUMMEEEEE! My tummy hurts. And I have a headache." "Mummeeeee! I have a cough. And a fever." "Erdegooglieeyaawaaah" (translation: I have just had my second lot of vaccinations and I feel terrible). Three boys (aged seven, five and four months); three complaints in the same week. One solution: a spoon of pink medicine.

Lee Ni Chinneide, a homeopath who practises at the Elbow Room healthcare centre in Dublin, offered a counter-remedy at a recent open day. Applying the homeopathic, holistic principle of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms, she proposed more individualised methods of temperature control, specifically in childhood illnesses.

Parents' actions vary: some panic when the child's temperature is 38 degrees, others don't get excited in anticipation of it hits 40. Obviously, said Ni Chinneide, if a child has suspected meningitis or could be in danger, do not delay seeing a doctor. But if their raised temperature – a sign that their immune system is fighting back – is brought on by something more routine, the parents' observations would determine the remedy.

For example, if the fever is only in the child's head and has not dispersed through the body, so that their face is red and their hands are cold, and they might be raving, Ni Chinneide would treat them with quick-acting belladonna.

A child with a pulsatilla fever – often when teething – is often weepy and clingy, has a snotty nose and gets sweaty on the side that they are lying on but feels better in fresh air. And an aconite fever comes on suddenly, for example after a shock, or a fright, or terrible news.

In any case of the type of fever the child has, common-sense actions such as stripping them down to their underwear and pressing a cold facecloth to their brow should help reduce the temperature.

As well as fever treatment, Ni Chinneide outlined the homeopathic remedies that she has found effective in treating general childhood situation such as tummy pain, "sticky eye", tummy upset, ear infections and croup, for which children are often prescribed antibiotics or inhalers.

Again, different symptoms determine the response: with tummy pain, some babies scrunch up their knees and respond well to pressure on their tummy while others arch their back and can't bear their tummy to be touched.

Depending on the symptoms of teething pain – drooling, red cheeks, hand-chewing, snuffles, diarrhoea – she treats babies with pulsatilla, silica or chamomilla, which is sold in a low-dose format as Teetha.

Another standard remedy is arnica, used for shock, nosebleeds, jet lag and in the treatment of strokes, whether caused by clots or bleeds. Many people take arnica tablets to accelerate healing after surgery, and use arnica ointment on bruises, but Ni Chinneide recommends it in tablet, rather than cream, form.

In any case of whether parents are inclined to use homeopathy, its holistic principles are a lesson in listening to a sick child and observing their symptoms meticulously. Noting patterns and changes in their general health, sleep pattern, appetite and mood will help to tailor their treatment and ensure the best outcome.

MOM MOMENTS: How did we live without it?

MOM MOMENTS: How did we live without it?

In this day and age we have so many baby/child products that help make our lives a small simpler. With many of them, once you use them you wonder how you were able to survive without them. Here are some items that fall in that category

Plastic bottles – I know there are questions out there about the safety of plastic, which may not make it such a wonderful invention after all. I just wonder how much glass mothers finished up sweeping up back in the day. I’m sure bottles were made of heavy duty glass, not prone to break easily. Though, I have seen many a toddler with the arm of Roger Clemens launch a bottle crosswise a room.

Foaming hand soap dispensers – It seems most kids have this aversion to hand washing. I estimate it is a drag to sit there with a bar of soap and lather up. Dispensers of antibacterial hand soap make it a small simpler, but make the dispenser one that shoots out foamy bubbles and how could a kid resist? It makes it fun to clean your hands.

Boppy pillows – These are fantastic for numerous reasons. Any mom who has nursed a baby knows how trying and awkward it can be to find a comfortable position. Boppy pillows make it so simple. Then there’s the other wonderful use for them – helping baby sit up. Babies are so wobbly when they are first learning to sit up and the Boppy pillow makes playtime much more fun because you don’t have to hold your arms out on either side waiting to catch them when them when they tumble. It’s also fantastic for tummy time to prop them up so they can see things better.

Adjustable pants – Whoever came up with the thought to insert supple adjusters inside the waist of children’s’ pants is a genius. Ok, it’s not rocket science, but it has eliminated the need for one of the most unlikable responsibilities of parenting – taking your kids shopping with you so you can have them try on pants.

Car seats – Infant car seats and booster seats have prevented many, many deaths and injuries and it’s a device all parents should be grateful to have. Though, not only do they keep kids safe, but ahead of schedule car seats were meant more for confinement than safety. Our parents didn’t have car seats and might not have even had seat belts. I don’t know how they managed having a car full of kids bouncing, crawling and sliding all over and kept from pouring over a cliff in a moment of insanity.

Pacifier holders – Ha! This eliminated the ancient game of “Let’s see how many times I can make Mom bend over and pick that up.” Also, thankfully it keeps lots of germs from making their way onto a binky.

Baby wipes – I remember back in my ahead of schedule babysitting days, taking care of children in diapers and by washcloths to clean bottoms. I was always glad I wasn’t the one doing the laundry. Eewww … at least the diapers were disposable.

Animated seats – Before batteries were added that would allow the seats to jiggle and lull a baby off to sleep, parents had to do the bouncing themselves. I had one of those manual ones back when my oldest was a baby. Though, it was a hands-free way to be eye to eye and interact with your baby and add a small comforting movement that could often silent a fussy one.

Swings and slings – Both items in give comfort to a baby and give Mom a small freedom. The ahead of schedule swings had to be hand cranked and started out vigorous, slowing down as they’d go. Then thanks to the magic of batteries, they can now go for hours. I always had one that made sounds of water swishing around to imitate sounds of the womb. It always worked like a charm and he’s be out like a set alight in no time.

The slings allow baby to be close to Mom – feel her warmth and smell her scent, while allowing Mom to have her hands free. Of course it’s nice to just sit and hold your baby and delight in him, but unless you have a full–time housekeeper and nanny for the siblings, you’re going to need use of your hands from time to time.

Cart covers – Shopping carts have always made me cringe. You’re pushing this thing along not know how many kids have sneezed on it or how many adults have picked their nose and then pushed it through the store. And naturally for a teething kid that desires something to gnaw on, that bar right at eye level seems appealing. I was so thrilled when cart covers came out, which enclose the child in a puffy fabric liner that can be machine washed. It covers the seat and handles and some versions have attachable toys to keep small ones occupied. Best. Thing. Ever.

Baby OrajelBabies: Teething can really Bite

Teething is the process whereby the teeth of a child starts to grow sequentially in. Teething can start as ahead of schedule as three months or later, in some cases, as twelve months. It may take up to numerous being for the 20 deciduous (more commonly called “baby” or “milk”) teeth to emerge. Since the teeth literally cut through or break out the soft, fleshy gums of the child, it is sometimes referred to as “cutting teeth”.

Signs of teething may include terrible temper, loss of appetite, chewing and biting objects, swollen or bruised gums, excessive salivation, elevated temperature, and sometimes earaches and diaper rash . Teething symptoms will usually start to rear their hideous head about six months in the enhancement of your baby.

During this process, you learn that your baby likes to chew – on just about everything and anything they can get their small hands on this can be perilous if the baby is allowed to chew on objects that are small enough to be swallowed or which could break while being chewed, making a sharp hazard. teethers and other toys are often designed with textures that massage the baby’s gums.

In cases everywhere the child is in obvious pain, some doctors recommend the use of anti-anti-inflammatory pain or safe for children containing benzocaine, such as Baby Orajel. Some infants gain relief from chewing on cold objects, like a washcloth or a teething ring designed that can be frozen. You can also massage baby’s gums with a clean finger. Your baby may find it uncomfortable at first, but will doubtless find it heartening after a few gentle rubs.

Pediatric dentists suggest brushing baby’s teeth as soon as they start to appear, and not wait in anticipation of all the teeth to come in before the introduction of an oral hygiene routine. Though, the use of toothpaste during this process is generally not recommended.

M.P. Eaton/This Week

Designer Gillian Matheson (right) shows model Kathy LeBlanc the elegant coat she designed for Elizabeth Stevens to wear over a classic but simple dress in the 2010 Heart Certainty Fashion Gala. Gillian is busy designing for this weekend’s show, and Kathy will once again walk the runway at the gala.

The Fashion Television host will be in Moncton this Saturday to take part in The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick’s (HSFNB) third annual fundraiser, The Heart Certainty Fashion Gala.

Jeanne, who is also host of the event, will walk the runway with 25 other well-renowned New Brunswick women from film, arts, music, sports, media and politics to shine the set alight on women’s heart health. All of the one-of-a-kind dresses featured in the gala have been made by alumni designers of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Erica, who graduated from the college in 2008, was one of numerous designers who place her name in a hat to make Jeanne’s custom gown. She spent hours researching dresses the fashion guru has worn in the past and altered designs numerous times before settling on what she hopes will be an impressive piece. The floor-length dress is made out of heavy high interpretation satin. It features a rounded neckline and hand beaded and sequence embellishments on the waist and shoulders.

Although Erica was ecstatic to have been chosen to design Jeanne’s one of a kind dress, the 25-year-ancient New Brunswicker is understandably a bit nervous. She won’t meet the fashion guru in person in anticipation of she’s ready to walk the runway as one of the models in the event.

Fortunately for Erica this is not the first time she’s made an all together without a fitting. She made Barb Roberts’ dress for last year’s gala while studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. The dress was shipped crosswise the continent to the CTV reporter and, to Erica’s relief, it was a perfect fit.

“I’m really excellent at understanding sizes and shapes,” she says. “I can pick a pair of jeans off the rack for someone without knowing their size. You gain an eye for it.”

Last year she also made a wedding dress for her sister who wore the gown for the first time a week before her huge day. Once again it was an exact fit. Erica is hoping for the same results when Jeanne tries her dress on for the first time at the gala.

“I’ve tried to stay away from making a really tailored look for Jeanne,” she says. “I’ve used more of a drape effect, which gives me a small more leeway on how it’s going to fit.”

She’s also incorporated into the design a gathering at the waist allowing her to adjust the size if needed. Nevertheless she’s bringing a needle and thread with her to the show.

“This part will be a tad stressful,” she says. “But I can adjust the hem if I need to.”

Despite Erica’s busy schedule, which includes finishing her Single of Fine Arts at the University of New Brunswick and working part-time at ENVY, she took on the added challenge of designing a second dress for the show. She’s now putting the final touches on a floor-length gown for Marie-Claude Blais, New Brunswick’s Minister of Justice. Her all together is made from heavy knit jersey and features beaded embellishments at the waist and possibly the neckline or forearm.

“I like designing something you can tell is well made from afar but as you get closer, the depth keeps unveiling itself,” she says.

All of the dresses to be modelled in the event have been designed with extreme care and attention to detail and many hours of handiwork. On average a dress such as those featured in the fashion show can take 40 to 60 hours to complete.

Although each designerhas their own unique process for putting together their creation, here’s an example of the general steps in making a one-of-a-kind look.

The labour of fashion like usually starts with assembly the client to determine their style and suggestions.

Then it’s back to the sketching pad or Photoshop to make a basic drawing. Once both the model and designer are satisfied, the client’s body measurements are used to make a detailed draft of the piece and a mock-up of the basic pattern by inexpensive cotton muslin.

“It’s not a very striking material, but it shows you how it will basically look once it’s made,” says Joëlle Richard, who is designing a dress for another model in the event, CTV Reporter Dina Bartolocci.

Though, like Erica, Joëlle has had to come up with some creative ways to properly “fit” Dina’s dress. Her design business, Romantica Nocturnif, is based in Rogersville and her client lives in Saint John. Fortunately, other than Dina being four inches shorter than Joëlle, her measurements are so close to her own she’s been able to fit the floor length satin dress to her own body keeping in the mind the slight differences. She’s also incorporated an adjustable corset into the Victorian-styled outfit, which in addition to the dress features a shrug jacket and a pair of velvet sleeve length gloves.

Of course, in most cases, the client is able to try on the cotton muslin garment, which is adjusted as necessary. For example, areas that need to be tightened can be pinned and a pencil can be used to draw what’s called style shape on the fabric to indicate a lower neckline, for instance. The pattern is then updated based on the new measurements and the process is repeated in anticipation of the designer is satisfied with the fit and ready to commence making the garment out of the “real” fabric. But first the designer has to find their imagined fabric, which can be one of the most challenging steps.

For example, Joëlle had a specific red on red stripe pattern in mind for Dina’s all together, which she couldn’t find in stores or online. So she ordered a red on white stripe with the hope of dying it. But that proved to be even larger challenge.

“At first it was looking more orange than red and then I had this catastrophe everywhere all the dye went through the wash cycle,” she says. “So I went out shopping with the intention of export more dye, but luckily I finished up finding the fabric I was looking for.”

Once the designer has their fabric in hand they can sew the custom garment and have a final fitting. This last step in the process is most liable the most exciting aspect for designers who finally get to see their imagined creation come to life. But Joëlle warns against rushing forwards too quickly.

“It’s very vital to make sure everything is going to fit the way you want it to before you start cutting into what may be expensive and extensive fabric,” she says.

Although Erica and Joëlle both made their custom gowns without a single fitting, it’s normal to have at least two, if you’re lucky, according to Joëlle. But often times it takes many more fittings to get the perfect clothing mould. In fact, fashion designer Gillian Matheson has had five fittings with Lisette Michaud, regional vice-president of Royal Bank and a Heart and Stroke Foundation board member. The three-month process started in December and Lisette just recently had her final fitting. She will be modelling a backless floor-length mermaid style gown, which features a boat neck and a teach.

“It’s plain in the front, but when you turn around that’s everywhere you see the sexiness,” says Lisette. “I feel like a million bucks wearing it. How many of us have the privilege of getting a dress made for us? It’s been quite an exciting experience.”

Though, she initially had some hesitations about the bold colour choice. All of the dresses featured in the show are red symbolizing the strength and power in women.

“Red is a very imposing, out there colour,” she says. “But it really makes you feel very powerful.”

In fact, Lisette is so pleased with her red dress she’s plotting to buy the satin gown to wear again during an upcoming cruise. Of course, she must first wear the dress down the runway, which is surprisingly nerve-wracking for a woman who routinely speaks in public as part of her role at RBC.

“I flourish on public speaking and delight in that part of my job very much, but the fashion show aspect of this event makes me a small nervous because it’s not something I do often,” she says. The last time Lisette modelled was as a teen in 1991. She was crowned Miss Grand Falls and participated in the Miss New Brunswick pageant.

“But I accepted the invitation to be a model even though I’m a small nervous because it’s a fantastic produce sponsored by RBC,” she says. “I feel so excited and privileged to be part of it. A lot of people don’t realize that more women die from heart disease than men. We may even save a few ladies through this event.”

Heart disease is an issue that’s close to the heart for many of the models, especially Sandy Hanson and her nine-and-a-half month ancient daughter Ashley who was born with ingrained heart disease. Ashley has been in heart failure for much of her young life, too weak to even eat without the help of feeding tubes. Although she was scheduled for open heart surgery, the day of her operation the doctors learned that the two holes in her heart had miraculously begun to close. Now, they’re nearly completely healed. Sandy describes her daughter as a healthy pleased baby who is even crawling up stairs after her grown-up brother, Thomas, and keen to model in the show. Sandy and Ashley will be wearing dresses designed by Sherry Kinnear, who is the head of wardrobe for Theatre New Brunswick.

Sandy will be modeling a sleeveless knee-length dress with a low cut back and an lop-sided neckline.

“My husband says it’s curvy,” she laughs. “He likes it. If you’re a mother, you know that sometimes those nice striking sexy dress up clothes go out the door with the babies. When I tried on the dress I thought, ‘Oh wow, this is nice.”

Ashley will be modeling a princess-style satin dress with puffed sleeves, white lace trim and a tiered skirt featuring cut outs of hearts with white lace underlay.

Sherry also designed a matching headband for Ashley but Sandy isn’t sure whether it will stay on her head or end up being used as a teething toy.

The same goes for her black patent leather shoes, which she hopes Ashley doesn’t fling down the runway. That’s if she’s wide awake for the event. She’s naturally asleep by 8 p.m. and the fashion show starts shortly after 9 p.m. “I really hope she’s a pleased bubbly baby and not asleep or crying,” she says.

But her largest worry is walking down the runway in a pair of silver 2-1/2-inch high heels while holding a baby. “I’m a klutz by scenery so I’m a small nervous,” she says. “My plot is to just walk straight ahead.”

Sandy was questioned by the Heart and Stroke Foundation to take part in the event after submitting a video about children who suffer from ingrained heart disease.

“I was honoured to be questioned,” she says. “At the time my daughter was in heart failure and facing open heart surgery and it gave us something positive to look forwards to.”

She also hopes the event will help raise awareness of heart disease and its effects on women of all ages, even those as young as Ashley.

The goal of The Heart Certainty Fashion Gala is to empower women to protect their heart health. Heart disease and stroke are the leading produce of death for Canadian women. Yet it is still widely viewed as a “man’s disease”. Through simple and achievable lifestyle changes, women can reduce their risk for heart disease and stroke by as much as 80 per cent.

Proof That People Are Prejudiced Against Breast-Feeding Women? Not ...

Proof That People Are Prejudiced Against Breast-Feeding Women? Not ...

This study just out in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin claims to have found a general societal prejudice against women who breast-feed. Reports about the work concurred. But I reckon it works better as an example of what’s incorrect with our conceptions of prejudice. It’s also excellent fodder for critics who say social psychology has methodological issues and possibly even a small left-wing bias.

Here are the experiments that led the authors to conclude that bias about breast-feeding makes a “social cost” for American women who do it. In one, 30 students answered questions about their views on Brooke Shields, after being told that she’d written a book about fatherliness. Half were told the book discussed (among other parental topics) breastfeeding, while the other group learned that the book talked about Shields’ experiences with bottle-feeding. Men and women who thought Shields had breast-fed saw her as warmer and friendlier, but “significantly less competent in general, and less competent in math specifically,” the paper says (according to Tom Jacobs’ solid and detailed tale on Miller-McCune; as the study is behind a paywall, I was only able to get the abstract).

A second study questioned students to give their impressions of a woman based on a message about arrangements for a feast, left on her answering machine. The 55 students were on terrible terms into four groups. One heard “I figured you would want to go home and breastfeed the baby”; a second group heard “I figured you would want to go home and give the baby a bath.” And the third cohort heard “I figured you would want to go home and change into your strapless bra.” Finally, a control group heard a completely neutral message.

Questioned to rate the woman as a job candidate, the students (men and women alike) gave the buck rating to the breastfeeding woman, with second-buck rank going to the strapless-bra lady. But the woman going home to bathe her baby did roughly as well as the one who received the neutral message. In other words, signs of parenting didn’t trigger perceptions that the hypothetical woman was less competent. Rather, that result appeared after people were primed to reckon about the woman’s breasts. It didn’t matter much if they were being invoked as a source of food or as a source of pleasure.

That’s an fascinating conduct experiment. But it doesn’t justify the researchers’ claim that “breastfeeding is a devalued social category.” Their evidence instead found that when people are prompted to reckon about a woman’s breasts, they will, immediately afterward, perceive her as less well-fitted to the world of work. Their own study found that this effect isn’t confined to breast-feeding (the sexy-bra prompt had the same impact on the people in the conduct experiment).

What if the effect is not confined to breasts? Suppose the students had had to judge a hypothetical man’s messages, one of which referred to Viagra and another to a prostate exam. If they saw him as less competent, that would suggest a general effect of stereotypes: If you remind me that Person A has a sexual identity and then question me about their suitability for a non-sexual role, I will see them as less suitable.

Of course, the results of my imaginary Viagra conduct experiment might come out differently than I imagine at first, um, blush. I’m not trying to predict the outcome here. I’m just saying the conduct experiment ought to be done. Without some tests of alternative explanations for the result, you can’t jump from this result to the conclusion that people have a prejudice against breast-feeding. That’s the methodological issue often raised by critics of social psychology: The prosecutor’s fallacy of claiming evidence that fits a hypothesis has proved the hypothesis.

Other experiments suggest that priming people with stereotypes affects their behavior, in both desirable and undesirable ways. In this 1999 study, Margaret Shih and her colleagues reminded some women before a math test that they were women, and found that they scored worse than women who had not gotten that message. On the other hand, in that same conduct experiment women reminded that they were Asian-American did better than other women on that test.

This new study also found that stereotype cues can prompt people to see the same person in different ways (Brooke Shields the bottle-feeding math ace versus Brooke Shields the breast-feeding airhead). If breast-feeding has a consistent “social cost,” then, the effects of that stereotype must outweigh and outlive the effects of other, more positive primes. If that weren’t so, then breast-feeding mothers could counter the effects of those stereotypes by invoking others.

Which is, of course, what common-sensical people do. If I want someone to pay me to write something, I doubtless won’t discuss my son’s teething issues. This is because the stereotypes raised by mentions of my book and writing description are more consistent with the task at hand than are stereotypes of dads with cranky babies. It is not because society has a shameful prejudice against fathers with screaming kids, which all of us must dutifully repair.

Of course, it may be that stereotypes that invoke human ecology do have more power than work-based stereotypes like “high-powered executive” or “tenured biologist.” No one knows how such an conduct experiment would turn out (if anyone did, it wouldn’t be an conduct experiment, and it wouldn’t be necessary to do it). What I’m wondering about is why the authors didn’t reckon it needed to be done. Whe instead they announced that society needed fixing because of its general prejudice against something the authors (and other right-thinking members of the species Homo academicus) generally support.

I suspect that leap to a conclusion from these results is an example of the ideological blinders that Jonathan Haidt has been decrying lately. (Might that also clarify why the study seems to treat the devaluation of the strapless-bra woman as unsurprising and unalarming.)

Why pick on one study that reported an fascinating result? Because I noticed that not one media report about this article took a step back to question about the path from conduct experiment to conclusion. Each time people like me give these kinds of claims a free ride, we encourage a dumbed-down conversation about mind science—one in which all claims either go unchallenged or get met by ideologically-motivated criticisms (“your sample was too small and only included left-handed college students!” or “your research was paid for by George Soros!”). If we want to know what the behavioral sciences can tell us about ourselves, we’re going to have to do better than that.
