7 Common teething symptoms in babies

7 Common teething symptoms in babies

Teething symptoms in babies usually start to appear around 6 months of age. In several cases, teething can start at any age linking 3 to 12 months of age, and it's normal.

The signs of teething in babies may vary with different severity. Some of babies may feel lot of ache, crying out loud because they feel pain at their gum. The additional may feel nothing.

Teething symptoms in babies

1. Drooling – this condition is normal to baby with 3-4 month-ancient. From this age you may see your baby start drooling more often than normal. Teething makes this drooling worst with some babies than others. This waterworks are on for many babies starting from about ten weeks to three or four months of age.

2. Chin or face rash – skin rash around chin can renovate when your baby is drooling. This rash is a result of constant spit contact with the skin, makes the skin around shin and mouth to become irritated. Swipe out the drool will help prevent the rash.

3. Coughing – another side effect of drooling is cough all that drool can make babies gag and cough especially if there are no additional signs of flu, cold or allergies.

4. Low grade-fever – this fever is one of teething symptoms in babies. Frequently baby gets a affront fever while teething. To make sure that the fever is an effect of teething and not caused by additional condition, just contact your doctor especially if the fever is above 39C or if the fever last for more that two days.

5. Gum pain – first teeth usually hurt the most. The tenderness of tender gum tissue can cause what seems like terrible pain to some babies.

6. Not sleeping well – the pain that may cause from teething can happen during the day and night. This condition can make your baby wakes more often at night when the pain gets worse.

7. Biting and gnawing – a baby that is teething will gnaw and gum down on anything she or he can get their mouth around.  The counter pressure from biting on something helps relieve the pressure from under the gums.

Take the bite out of Baby's Teething

Take the bite out of Baby's Teething

It starts when your baby is approximately six months ancient, just when you thought she was settling in and becoming "simple." That's when the crying, buzzing, drooling and plain ancient crankiness start. But, it's all par for the course when a baby's teeth break through the gum tissue. Who can blame her? There are things you can do to help ease the misery.

What can I expect?

Teething symptoms range widely from baby to baby. Some exhibit a few of the above symptoms, while others keep their parents busy day and night. On the additional end of the spectrum are the lucky young souls, not to mention their parents, who breeze through the teething process without showing any symptoms at all.

Drooling may start several weeks before the tooth really starts to erupt through the gum. If drooling is excessive, it can cause a rash on your baby's chin, cheeks or upper chest. It helps to dry her chin with a clean cloth and apply petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, around the mouth. An absorbent sheet where she sleeps may also help.

When teething starts, babies are typically in the oral-discovery phase of development, which means they like to place everything they find into their mouths. Many gnaw on their fingers or toys to relieve gum ache around an incoming tooth. Some refuse to eat or drink because their mouths are sore.

How can I help my baby be more comfortable?

Mild teething symptoms that improve over a small period of time aren't a cause for concern, but here are a few tricks to make them more tolerable:

• Massage the pain – Use a clean finger, moistened gauze pad or damp washcloth to rub your baby's gums. It's also a excellent way to jumpstart the habit of running a wet washcloth over baby teeth for dental health.

• Try a teething ring – Use rubber rings instead of liquid-to the top teething rings, since the latter may break. Some parents use frozen teething rings, but I don't urge this because the extreme cold may cause more pain. You can place the ring in the refrigerator instead.

• Offer a bottle – If a bottle helps your baby, be sure to fill it with water. Extended chewing or sucking on a bottle to the top with formula, milk or juice may expose your baby to too much sugar, leading to tooth decay.

• Try to chill – It may help to hold a cold washcloth over sore gums. If your baby is intake solids, try offering cool foods, such as yogurt or applesauce.

• Over-the-Counter Remedies – Hyland's Baby Teething Tablets offer a homeopathic treatment for teething pain that melts on the baby's tongue. Another well loved choice is Baby Orajel teething gel, which should be positioned topically on the gums after the tooth has broken through. For babies who are in such ache from teething that they weep incessantly, use an over-the-counter acetaminophen-based pain medication, such as Infants' Tylenol.

Should I take my baby to the doctor?

If teething symptoms don't go away after a few days, or if they grow in severity, take your baby to the doctor. It's possible that the pain is from something more serious, such as an infection. A common myth of teething is that it causes fever and diarrhea. Medical research does not support this belief.

Once my baby has teeth, how can I keep them healthy?

Dental health is a lifelong endeavor, and it's never too early to keep a child's teeth clean. Parents can use a washcloth or a finger toothbrush to wipe the new teeth. Once a child turns 1, it's a excellent thought to brush his or her teeth with non-fluoridated toothpaste, which makes it safe to swallow.

Simple Teething Comforts For Babies That Work : TipNut.com

Simple Teething Comforts For Babies That Work : TipNut.com

It's a natural part of life and we all have to go through it, but teething isn't something babies deal with very well and each parent braces themselves for when "it's time". It can be quite painful with some babies suffering more than others, their young gums haven't had a chance to toughen up yet and the sensation of cutting teeth is new to them.

Here are a few home remedies to help ease the pain and the result may be both you and baby get some well-needed rest ;) .

Teething Toys Can Provide Some Comfort While New Teeth Work Their Way Out

Teething Toys Can Provide Some Comfort While New Teeth Work Their Way Out

Keep in mind that there are commercial items you can buy such as topical gels, teething tablets and baby Tylenol that can help numb the pain, but consult your doctor or pharmacist first for recommendations and question for what risks (if any) they may pose.

First, how to tell if teething is the problem…

Signs:

  • Cranky and irritable
  • Gums are red and swollen (especially where tooth is coming through)
  • Fever
  • Chewing on fingers and toys
  • More drool than usual
  • Distress sleeping
  • Redness or rash on cheeks or chin
  • Congestion
  • Sore ears
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loose stool or mild diarrhea
  • Wash your hands well then rub your finger along baby's gums, massage them slowly but firmly.
  • Soak a clean washcloth in water and freeze then let baby chew on it. The cold helps numb painful gums. If that doesn't work, try soaking a cloth in chamomile tea and then freeze.
  • A common recommendation is to give baby a frozen piece of food such as a waffle, bagel, carrot stick or popsicle but these can be a choking hazard if pieces aren't large enough or chunks break off, do so only with close supervision.
  • Freeze teething toys and have them at the ready for when a tooth starts making an appearance.
  • Help baby sip on cold water or juice, the coolness will help soothe the gums.
  • Chilled metal spoons can offer relief when baby chews on them, but only give this to a child while they're closely supervised, sitting and distorted in (high chair or car seat). A tipsy toddler can fall forward or trip shoving the spoon deep into the mouth and cause serious injury.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of lime oil with 1 drop of clove oil then massage onto gums. Clove oil is a natural analgesic but it's too strong for baby if used full strength (will burn their gums), make sure to dilute in lime oil first.

See a trend in this list? Chilled items work well for soothing sore gums. Even feeding baby spoonfuls of chilled yogurt or pudding can help. Keep a tub of washcloths and rubber teething rings in the freezer so you'll always have one ready during troublesome moments.

What about brandy? Rubbing brandy or additional alcohol along the gums is an ancient wives remedy used for many decades but it is now recognized as unsafe to use on young children and no longer advised or recommended.

If your child is suffering for long periods of time and the above remedies don't help, consult your doctor for a commercial product as advised above. If you have a tried-and-right that isn't mentioned here, please share in the comments below (a desperate mom or dad will surely be grateful for the tips).

Crib Bumper Repurposed as Teething Rail | Apartment Therapy ...

Crib Bumper Repurposed as Teething Rail | Apartment Therapy ...

Now that the American Association of Pediatrics has finally issued their official recommendation against using crib bumpers, there are going to be a lot of them that go needlessly straight into the waste bin. It’s still nigh impracticable to buy a crib skirt without the bumper, as few companies sell all the pieces separately. So what to do with the ancient, hazardous vestige of babies past?

Traci came up with a brilliant solution. When her son Bru started teething on the crib rails, she took out the ancient unused bumper and got to work. The result? Her son has a nice cushioned place to chew, and the crib is also confined so that it stays nice and new for the next baby.

Traci’s crib is the convertible type with only three sides of rails, so it was a bit trickier than a simple four sided solution. She wound up tucking the ends underneath any side and used extra ties with double knots for security.

Thankfulness Traci!

" You may reckon something is a teething problem, yet it is really a take a nap problem. Usually it is only about 2-4 days of super fussy times that baby ambition nonexistence extra soothing until the tooth pops via. Since you have no direction of knowing how long or how often your baby's take a nap might be affected along teething, just be sure you prioritize your baby's take a nap. Tests to identify a true amber ... - Baby teething necklaces

Tests to identify a true amber ... - Baby teething necklaces

Tests to Determine Amber Authenticity:

Smell Tests

Smell tests are effective because natural amber has a specific smell, which is hard to obtain when producing falsifications. After heating real Baltic amber diffuses a specific delicate fragrance of pine-tree resins. Odours, diffused by falsifications: copal – smell of “sweet” resins, all others – smell of burnt plastic.

"Rubbing" Test

It is possible to heat real amber by rubbing until it releases the smell of pine- tree resins. Disadvantages: a strong hand is required, it is rather hard to heat amber (especially when polished) to the necessary temperature and it is hard to check jewellery. When rubbing into additional materials, amber can scratch. •

The most effective – "Hot Needle"

Test Push a heated needlecraft into less visible top of sample amber (drill hole of bead, etc.). If you smell a light pine resin odour, it is right amber. Disadvantage: a small burning mark is left – it is irremediable. • Amber is brittle – when pushing a needle, you will see some cracks. When pushing a needle into plastic, it swoops.

"Salty Water" Test

Relative weight of amber (also copal and polystyrene) (1.04-1.1) is small less than that of salty water (1.15). Thus, only these materials will flow in salt water, while others – will sink. Add 7-8 teaspoons full of salt to 300 ml and stir. Leave a salt for a few summary to dissolve the salt water, still stirring. Perform the test, then rinse a sample with clean water. Disadvantages: Not suitable for polystyrene and copal, jewellery (metal, beads thread, buckle makes amber to sink). In order to make sure that the flowing material is amber, a hot needle test must be performed.

IR spectroscopy

The most effective scientific method for identifying fossil resin – IR-spectroscopy. Baltic amber is characterized by IR-spectrum segment called “Baltic amber shoulder”.

"Trusted Hands"

There are many methods to distinguish real amber from falsehood, but for person, who has less knowledge about amber, the safest method is to buy amber from "trusted hands". It is ideal, if a store provides a certificate, proving amber authenticity – you will be sure about your buy.

What Every Parent Should Know About Teething Basics | Pregnancy ...

Teething is inevitable. Some babies get through this process with small to no ache and some have major pain. While it is hard to tell what is ailing a baby that cannot talk, knowing teething basics will help prepare any parent. The fundamental teeth start to erupt around 6 months of age, with eruption completed by 24 to 36 months. Remember that all children are different and teething can happen at a different pace for each baby.

Teething Symptoms

  • increased biting
  • drooling
  • gum rubbing
  • sucking
  • irritability
  • wakefulness
  • ear rubbing
  • facial rash
  • decreased appetite for solid foods

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the safest recommended way to soothe baby while teething is the use of cold items because the cold acts as an anesthetic for the gums. Chilled teething rings, pacifiers, spoons, clean wet washcloths, and frozen bagels or bananas are all excellent choices.

Of course use extra caution when giving your baby frozen food as it will melt and maybe be bitten off into pieces. This can cause a choking hazard. If your child is extremely uncomfortable, acetaminophen or ibuprofen in an infant dosage may be given. Consult you doctor for the proper dose.

“My baby is 10 months ancient but he is not even waving excellent bye and not showing any signs.  I’m worried about that because I have been teaching him to clap hands, but he does not respond. What do I do? Help!” -Shalini

Your concerns for the development of your 10-month ancient are justified. Although each baby develops at his or her own pace and there’s a broad spectrum for appropriate developmental stages, a 10-month ancient baby is expected to know foreign language and…

Wearing 'Bracelets of Joy' gives assist to leukemia victim's family

Wearing 'Bracelets of Joy' gives assist to leukemia victim's family

A Franklin County fashion trend aims to ease the financial woes of one local family who continues to battle the diagnosis of their 9-month-ancient pride and joy.

Joy Conley was just 5 months ancient when she was diagnosed with TALL Leukemia, a form of the cancer which is not common to infants, according to Grandma Peggy Stanley.

"Nikki, my daughter in law, used to be a nurse," Peggy clarified. "She told my son Justin, on that Friday (June 27) that baby Joy looked pale. She was fussy and had a low-grade fever."

The parents thought the otherwise healthy child was teething and made an appointment for her the following Monday. It didn't take doctors long to realize that Joy needed more wide testing and she was sent by ambulance to St. Louis where she and her family faced the terrible news that would come.

"Our life changed," Peggy said. "At first, they had to sedate her because she was so sick. They started her chemo (therapy). It is very hard on small babies."

At 9 months ancient, Joy has two ports in her chest and is not able to crawl around and play like normal babies. She weighs only a small over 13 pounds and has lost most of her hair but not her spirit.

"We haven't gotten to see her but twice since all of this," Peggy said, explaining that she was not able to have visitors due to her illness and treatments.

The baby's aunt and Peggy's daughter, Shauna Stanley, pulled photos from a bag monogrammed on the side, "Bracelets of Joy" which was full of the bracelets she and others have made as a fundraiser for the child.

"She's our Joy," the grandma said about herself and her husband Robbie and their family.

The photos were of a smiling and pleased baby, not unlike any additional baby at that age, loving on her daddy who held her tight, kissing her face and playing guitar for her as she lay in her hospital bed.

Shauna said she had gotten a soda-tab bracelet from a yard sale about a year earlier and one night as she sat in the floor thinking about baby Joy, she and Brittani Wertz (cousin) chose they'd make them as a fundraiser for the family's overwhelming expenses but also as a way to do something from so far away.

"You feel helpless," Shauna said. "This way, people that donate can get something in return too."

Shauna started a Facebook page called Bracelets of JOY and also had shirts made with a bible verse on the back and message of like for Joy on the front.

Peggy said the faith of the family through the process has been key to their ability to overcome their dread and push forward with hope and the belief that Joy will be healed.

"They lean on the Lord a lot," Peggy said. "Joy was dedicated in church in May and June she got sick."

Do Brothers Stall Their Sisters' Sex Lives?

Do Brothers Stall Their Sisters' Sex Lives?

Fifteen months ago I gave birth to a baby girl. The child is now a seam-popping twenty-five-plus pounds. Babies, they grow so quickly it’s creepy — my thoughts quick-forward through her teething years to the teens — and I’m terrified. Problem is, my family lives in New York City where children grow up too quickly. The weenies of tweens should stay in their jeans, but all too often they don’t.

The age at which a teenage girl starts to become sexually active depends a lot on her social environment — peers, culture and so on. It especially depends on the family environment, according to a recent study by Australian behavioral ecologists Fritha Milne and Debra Judge. But here’s the thing: family environment is not necessarily influential for the expected reasons, such as curfews and chastity pledges and additional parentally-imposed restrictions.

The hidden shape is the younger sibling.

Milne and Judge recruited nearly 200 women and 76 men, all living in or around the city of Perth, Australia, and questioned them questions about their family lives and sexual development. The results were that girls with younger brothers only (no sisters) lost their virginity an average of more than a year later (at age 18.3) than girls with younger sisters only. Girls with both younger brothers and sisters lost it nearly two years later on average (age 19.3) than girls with no younger siblings. Younger sisters alone had no impact.

The chastity effect only applied to girls with younger brothers. Having a huge brother (or sister) didn’t make a girl any less likely to hold onto her virginity. Yet another weird pattern emerged. This one involved the girls’ physical maturity.

The more older brothers a girl had, the later she got her first period. Girls with only elder brothers got their first visit from “Aunt Flo” up to a year later (at age 13.6) than girls with older sisters or no older siblings (age 12.7). (This is meaningful given that breast cancer and additional conditions are related to earlier menstruation.)

Elder brothers delay physiological maturation, while younger brothers delay behavioral maturation.

What’s going on?

Trained as behavioral ecologists, Milne and Judge took a look at the huge picture. Daughters are often caregivers. Historically — and in traditional societies — a woman with daughters as first- or second-born children has a larger family than a mom whose first children were sons. Elder daughters take care of younger siblings, which frees up Mom to keep popping them out. Boys historically required more assets than do girls, which made a huge sister’s contributions even more vital. As a result, these helpful elder daughters experience a delay in starting their own families. In the modern world where women don’t usually start their families until their mid-twenties on average, this is no problem. In the past, females with brothers may have had fewer children over their lifetimes.

The larger mystery is what’s really behind Huge- and Small Brother’s stalling effect on their sisters’ sexuality. This is unknown territory, so Milne and Judge tread lightly here. The safest theory is that the delays are behavioral. Girls with small brothers lose their virginity later because they’re too busy taking care of their siblings to have like lives of their own. Perhaps small brothers, who are slower than female siblings to renovate and reach puberty, keep their elder sisters in a more childish mindset. Or perhaps the stress of caregiving slows down puberty.

The researchers should also consider a much more surprising yet equally plausible theory: brothers send out chemical cues (pheromones) in their sweat that inhibit their sisters’ sexual development. Odd as it sounds, this would clarify the perplexing finding that girls with older brothers get their first periods later than their peers. And, it appears, so do girls who grow up with their biological fathers in the household, compared to their peers with absent dads. Several studies, including here and here and a large one at Penn State that involved over nineteen hundred college students, came to this conclusion. (Fascinatingly, the same study found that girls growing up in homes with males unrelated to them got their periods earlier than average, suggesting that a non-related male may speed up sexual maturity.)

The sweat-stifles-sexuality theory isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Additional animals — rodents, for instance — use pheromones to modulate sexual maturity and fertility in a population. Over the years, a girl would inhale chemical cues in fraternal sweat — reckon of all persons sock and armpit odors. Persons chemicals would hit the hypothalamus of her brain where sex hormones are produced, and slow down the works. The result is that puberty strikes a small later. Evolutionarily language, this allows girls to stay in the family nest longer without conflict. The risk of incest is cut-rate.

Knowing all this, should I try for a son so that my daughter will subsidy from the younger-brother effect? Certainty is, the data applies to populations, not individuals. There are no guarantees; these are just fascinating findings that merit more research. Moreover, I’m in over my head right now with my baby girl’s teething and feeding challenges. Sure, I’ll want preserve her girlhood for longer than a New York minute. But I also need to preserve my sanity.
