Brain-Imaging in Depressed Moms Shows Blunted Response to Crying ...

SATURDAY, Feb. 26 — Armed with brain scans, researchers have exposed crying babies trigger a far more muffled response in the brains of depressed mothers than in mothers who aren’t depressed.

Contrary to a previous theory, “it looks as even if depressed mothers are not responding in a more negative way than non-depressed mothers. What we saw was really more of a lack of responding in a positive way,” said examine lead author Heidemarie K. Laurent in a news release from the University of Oregon.

The examine, which appears online in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, is the first to examine how the brains of depressed women responded to the crying of babies.

When the babies cried, the brains of the mothers who weren’t depressed lit up in the areas connected to reward and motivation. “In this perspective, it was fascinating to see that the non-depressed mothers were able to respond to this weep signal as a positive cue,” Laurent said. “Their response was consistent with wanting to approach their infants. Depressed mothers were really lacking in that response. “

The key message from the examine, the researchers noted, was that depression can have a long-lasting impact on mother-infant relationships by dampening the brain’s response to a baby’s emotional cues.

According to Laurent, the investigate — and the levels of activity in the brain — suggests the challenges of treating depression in mothers. “Some of these prefrontal problems may be changed more easily by addressing current symptoms,” Laurent said in the release, “but there may be deeper, longer-lasting deficits at the motivational levels of the brain that will take more time to overcome.”

Breast Milk Ice Cream Beats Cow's Milk Any Day

You scream, I scream, we all scream for breast milk ice cream! Well, at smallest amount I do. Baby Gaga is the name of a new sort of treat served in the UK at a restaurant in Covent Garden that contains breast milk instead of the predictable cow’s milk.

It’s a modest extraordinary, but how is it any weirder than the fact that we drink cow’s milk on a regular basis? Is that as normal or healthy as the milk our mothers made for us?

Women are paid $24 for 10 ounces of milk, which was a morning pumping conference for me. I would have gladly donated to the cause since yum, yum!

I reckon the world is divided into those of us who want to try it all and those of us who are grossed out. I didn’t like the taste of my breast milk, but I tried it. So did my husband. He liked it a lot, really.

This isn’t that insane a plotting. In the US, we have restaurants that supply breast milk cheese and breast milk ice cream, both of which can be prearranged through Mother’s Milk Ice Cream Companionship.

I get that it’s different, but why is it any grosser than in effect sucking on a cow’s nipple? Isn’t creature breast milk better formulated for our specific needs? The dish, which costs nearly $22 for a bowl, probably tastes pretty similar to the ice cream I made last night for me and my family, which included whole cow’s milk, thumping cream (also from a cow), and honey. The only reason I don’t want to gag just thought in this area it is that it’s “normal” in our polish to drink the milk of cows and goats and sheep.

Drinking breast milk isn’t cannibalism or no matter what business like it. It isn’t like drinking pee or poo or blood. It’s a lot more “natural” to me than chicken embryos or pig’s intestines or any other dairy or meat product on the market now. For nearly four being, I lactated and fed my babies from my breast. It was the cleanest, best way for me to feed them and I loved being able to do it. I would gladly partake in Baby Gaga and hope that this trend spreads.

For those who don’t like it, here’s an thought: Don’t eat it. Novel concept, no?

The Covent Garden restaurant Icecreamists is paying £15 a pop for breast milk, which they blend with Madagascan vanilla pods and lemon zest into ice cream they call "Baby Gaga."

A female, dressed as Lady Gaga, serves the ice cream and unleashes a stream of liquid nitrogen through a squirt (also vaguely Milk-Plus).  As if this wasn't enough of an implementation is in infantalia, the ice cream is served with a rusk, which is a baby biscuit used for teething.

Icecreamists founder Matt O'Connor has said, "By by breast milk we've certainly agreed it a one hundred percent makeover. Its just one of a dozen radical new flavours we've invented. We want to exchange the way public reckon in this area ice cream."

See them? See the teeth?

I was feeling all warm and fuzzy and kumbaya in this area these celebs who breastfeed in public when I whipped it out at the playground this morning – until Abby bit me. There I was, feeling full of hippie like and granola fullness in the balmy sunshine, lovingly cradling my giant infant in my lap, when I let out a shocked yell and ruined the whole picture. Thank goodness I'm not Maggie Gyllenhall! That would have been a really embarrassing Gawker moment!

Abby's remarkably excellent-natured in this area the fact that she's getting four teeth at once – all up top, advancing up through her gums like a prowling army. I check them every few hours and it seems like there's more tooth every time. I thank my (and her) lucky stars that she doesn't get the mad black blood-blisters and low-grade fevers that Penny got with every new tooth, at smallest amount. Penny used to get super-frightened when I yelped in pain, but Abby just rears back and smiles at me, as if to say "I know, I just used these things!" But then she stops, or is done eating. And she really doesn't do it very hard – I have acquaintances whose babies draw blood! She just draws yelps!

It's times like these when I have a secret envy of moms who didn't breastfeed. Oh, tsk all you want, but their babies are completely fine, and they take a nap at night. And they can take cold medicine, which I can't do aptly now, and I am suffering! I'm so clogged up, the Neti Pot can't bust through! (That's a lot of in rank and a yucky mental picture! I apologize!)

Then again, I don't have to pack food – it packs itself. And 3am feeds are a breeze. Okay, boobs rule. For me. No judgment!

Dr. Google Says I'm Maybe Dying. But Probably Just Tired ...

You know how the Internet will tell you that if you're tired and thirsty you have headaches, it's everything from fatigue to diabetes to cancer? Even even if, for me, all of those things are just indicators that I am still bustling and made it through another day of motherhood? I'm early to reckon diagnosing babies with no matter what business falls below the same umbrella of Splendid, Thanks, That's Really Freaking Caring.

I don't know how other babies teethe, but based on the way my kids throw things in their mouths at any agreed moment and chew them to death, mine have been teething for well over a year now continuously. (When anyone sees them snacking on non-food bits and pieces, like say at Gymboree music class when the bells/maracas/drumsticks/scarves come out and go straight into Liam's backtalk, they say, "Oh, wow, are they ever teething," and I reckon, "Really? I call this 'Tuesday.'") We took him off the drugs to see if it dissipated, which it did, but before we may maybe place him back ON them to see if the drug was the cause or if it was viral, his ears deteriorated rapidly to the top where the doctor jumped out of his skin and prescribed a two-day course of injections to blast everything out of there.

So we're now at the top where Dylan EITHER is still bothered by an ear infection, or he's teething. He isn't feverish. He's grabbing at a spot on his face that may maybe be construed as either the ear canal or his back molars, which I know are percolating some mischief. He despises being place down at night, but he does ultimately go if I rock him enough. He's complained at naptime, too. But he's drinking and eating. I'm sure the Internet will tell me it's, like, knee cancer. But I'm just trying to shape whether I default to charitable him Motrin at night — something I despise to OD him on — or if I take him back to the doctor for a reassuring check. The responsible business to do, which I will very nearly surely do, is take him to the doctor. But it underlines that half of parenting is freaking guesswork, and boy, does it feel like crap if you find out you guessed incorrect, and that your poor modest boy is not, in fact, just taking a long time to get over his sniffles, but really has a rotten sinus conundrum. Or that he's not just teething, but has horrendous irritation in his ears and needs to see a specialist to reckon in this area getting tubes installed and protecting his examination and whatnot.

There's this dread of being the overreactive parent who turns up at the doctor every week being like, "Can you just take a peek?" (Which, with my doctor, is like a 90-minute odyssey. I like, like, like my pediatrician, and his undivided concentration is so worth it, and he adores my kids. But that office is so confused that it makes me postal.) But then there's the terror of screwing up, and gone something. The middle ground is hard to find. I know it gets better once they can talk, and Dylan can look at me and say, "Hey, Mom, my ears hurt like a bitch," which you know he will say since I am really going to be the mother who accidentally teaches her kids terrible words and phrases. In the meantime, I'll just… keep guessing, and hope I guess aptly. I reckon that's really parenting in a nutshell.

When planning a trip with your baby, don't go into a tizzy over what to pack and how to prepare. After all, if Manyata Dutt can travel to Bangkok with her four-month-old twins, you too can go globe-trotting with your little one.

Tara Sharma, mother of a 20-month-old boy Zen and host of soon-to-be-aired The Tara Sharma Show Diaries of a New Mum, shells out crucial tips. 

 Baby-friendly destinations

Tara has travelled extensively with her son Zen to places such as London, New York, Singapore, Boston, Buffalo, Cannes, most European countries and South Africa. All these places are baby-friendly, clean and well-equipped to respond to emergencies.

Malls and public restrooms have changing space for babies. Elevators make moving around with strollers easy. "You can do kiddie things- go to zoo and amusement parks, without worrying," says Tara.

 How to dress

Dress conveniently when travelling with your infant, especially if you are feeding. Buttoned shirts, t-shirts or kurtas make it easier for you to unbutton and feed the baby at any time. Tara suggests, "Carry a poncho along.

It covers all your vital parts." Wear long skirts, hosiery slacks, comfortable linen capris or stretchable chudidaars so that you can squat easily and feed your baby. Wear maternity bras as they are easy to hook off.

 How to pack

Travelling with a baby inevitably means double the luggage. "But carry baby's essentials in your hand luggage," says Tara. The list: baby's medicines, biscuits, milk powder (if you are not nursing), nappies, extra clothes, bibs to wipe messy burps and blankets to cover the baby or even as a head rest.

Carry diapers, one for each hour of the transit. You can also carry perfumed disposable bags to discard soiled nappies. Also carry wipes, tissues and some nappy rash cream.

 Be equipped

"A stroller can be your best friend. I carry one every time I travel with Zen. It made it easier for me to even go for jogs as Zen sat in his stroller," says Tara. A collapsible stroller frees you from holding your baby in your arms. You can also dump other stuff in the space under the carrier.

 Food

Take the milk powder mixed with the powdered sugar in one bottle or air-tight container with a small-sized flask of hot water. This makes it easy to mix when your child howls for food. If you're nursing your baby, it is important to munch at intervals.

So keep energy bars handy. Use instant oatmeal packets, available abroad. If your child is eating solids, carry teething biscuits. Also carry a portable breast pump if you nurse your kid.

 Carry the favourites

The rattle, book, best buddy bear or even the favourite jumpsuit, your baby's favourites will keep him/her engaged and sleep in his stroller.

Last, but not the least; carry your camera, battery charger and an extra memory card so that you do not miss a single moment of your first trip with your adorable baby.

My aunt is an LPN she said to use tylenol or ibprofen as Orajel makes the pain worse come back .. not sure if it strengthens gums .. but it makes it hurt worse later … You can try a little tylenol ibprofen / right on the gums.

Has anyone else heard stories about this? My son is only 3 months old and not teething yet. But I was having a conversation at work with some co-workers about teething babies and one actually suggested rubbing a little Vodka or Rum on their gums to help numb it!

Of course I won’t be doing this when my son starts to teeth, but was wondering if anyone else has heard of this?? Is this insane? Is this what parents did back in the day when there was no Baby Oralgel?

It’s an old folk remedy. It’s not recommended today (there are certainly safer remedies) but neither is it ‘insane.’ Baby wouldn’t absorb much alcohol.

(My mom used to tell me that that’s what her doctor advised — pour a shot of vodka, rub a little on baby’s gums, and then mom drinks the rest.)

My 10 month old used to drink 26 oz of formula a day. Suddenly she quit drinking formula, juice, water or whatever I put in front of her she throws a fit and refuses it. Most days I can get about 8 oz in her. She is still eating her food, but won’t eat her bottles. Should I be worried about dehydration? Could this be from teething?

when my daughter’s front teeth were coming through, she really didn’t want her bottle because her gums were too sore, but she’d still eat the mushy babyfoods i’d give her. when i’d put numbing gel (like orajel) on her gums, she’d be more likely to take a bottle after that.
or you can try and spoonfeed her some water or milk. if she eats regular babyfood, that will deliver some fluids, but she should probably get some more fluids than just that. if you are concerned, check with your pediatrician.

You could try watching her with some beef jerky sticks to numb the pain of her gums. The spices in the jerky soothe and numb. They may make her thirsty too. Does she drink from a cup yet? You could try something new with her if she doesn’t. My 9 month old son doesn’t drink as much as he did before he started teething. He keeps eating his solids and he chews biter biscuits from Gerber and an occasional beef jerky. I gave him a cup and he doesn’t suck the liquid, he gets drops out from gnawing on the spout. It’s something to try or think about if she hasn’t started a sippy yet. Good luck!

My son had 2 teeth by the time he was 6 months ancient and never had any problems with eething at all, it hardly hurt him! But my daughter who is nine months still cut a tooth (in fact it looks like the 2 below are those within the next few days), but she was showing signs of teething for 4 months .. their gums get all lumpy and weep and be miserable, but they go back in like a pain in the butt down. Biu few things I’ve establish is to help baby ibuprofen (which has anti-stirring so it is better than paracetamol for childhood diseases) and chewing on cold hard stuff. I reckon my daughter likes it when I peel a huge carrot from the refrigerator and let them chew on it (they cannot grip high cannot cos they bite out of any pieces) or even icy poles directly from the freezer and leave it in, the plastic usually dripping everywhere. You can also buy things that are already liquid in them to chew bub freez.

I would place a modest baby oraljel and then rub some tylenol in the gums. Make sure you a teething ring in the frig so they can have something cold to chew. I have an ancient 9Mo is now teething and he’s super cranky and cries and cries since his gums have, sometimes I would share an ice cream on a stick with him, it helps to numb his gums.

I really do not know the norm. But, my son was 3 months ancient when he cut his first tooth. Just since you got grown-up child a tooth at 8 months does not mean that you can not get the following child teethe before.
