5 Month Old Baby Development: Teething | Baby | Parents Connect

5 Month Old Baby Development: Teething | Baby | Parents Connect

Your baby is probably sitting upright for small periods before falling over like a frat boy after a bar crawl. Surround him with pillows to cushion his falls (and to give yourself a place to rest as you watch him tackle his latest crowning achievement).
What You’re Thinking: “‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a fantastic fall’ … So cute!”

  • Your baby may start teething any day now. Most babies get their first tooth between 4 and 7 months.
  • If your baby is able to hold his head up on his belly now, you can use him as a barbell and get in some postpartum exercises. Bench presses and squats are much more tolerable with an audience who smiles with you (and doesn’t judge you like persons snarky gym chicks).
  • By now, you may have figured out that you aren’t baby’s 24-hour, in-home entertainment center. But in case you haven’t, please know that it’s really cool to let baby learn to entertain himself. Keep him nearby, but don’t hesitate to offer him some stimulating objects or let him hang out in an Exersaucer and let him map out that he’s every bit as fascinating as Mom and Dad.
  • Your friend had a baby and you knew better than to give pajamas with three dozen miniature buttons down the back as a gift.
  • You really read an article in a parenting magazine (versus skimming the mag for new harvest).
  • You didn’t flinch when your partner told you he was meeting friends for drinks after work … you’re plotting on doing the same business tomorrow anyway!
  • You figured out how to open the toilet-seat lock you installed. (Your poor mother wasn’t so lucky …)
  • You distracted your baby long enough to make it through a 20-small supermarket line (thank you cell phone, wallet and keys!).
