Signs of Teething – What to Expect

There are a few common signs of teething you should watch out for, especially if your baby is anywhere from 3- 12 months ancient, which is the common age when teething starts. When you know the signs of teething, you will be able to help your child feel more comfortable and help them to get through this tough time with minimal tears.

Drooling is usually one of the first signs of teething and can start as early as two months before you really see teeth erupting from the gums. According to typical baby teeth order, the two center underneath teeth will start to appear first followed by the two center upper teeth. Drooling can cause chapped lips or chin, so try to keep the area as dry as possible by gently wiping the drool away when you see it with a soft cloth.

As these center teeth start to come in, you will probably soon see a lot of gnawing or chewing that you baby wasn't before. Feeling pressure on the gums feels excellent when teeth are coming through and a fantastic way to combat this is to give your baby some teething relief in the form of a cold, wet washcloth or even over the counter teething rings that you can freeze. Keeping these things around your baby and in their crib at nighttime will help them relieve some of the pain and maybe sleep a bit better.

Crying and fasting are other symptoms of teething. Obviously it hurts for these teeth to come in so your baby will weep and may not eat. Since your baby can't really tell you where the pain is, knowing that typically in baby teeth order, after the center teeth are in, the four teeth surrounding those that are already in will start coming through. If you know what areas are probably hurting, you can use some over the counter baby teething gel right on the gums themselves to give some relief.  Make sure you check with your doctor to make sure it is ok for your baby.

After the first 8 teeth are in, things will start to get simpler. The baby teeth order will continue with the back molars, then the bristly canines. Usually the molar the farthest back appear last until your child gets into their teens, when the third molars come in. Hopefully by then they will be able to take care of their teething tribulations themselves.
